📘 Group Presentation Assignment: Marshall McLuhan’s Media Theories

🎯 Objective

In this activity, each group will explore one of Marshall McLuhan’s most important ideas. Working together, you will create a 7-slide presentation that explains your assigned theme, answers guiding questions, and connects McLuhan’s theory to today’s media world.

🔹 Group Presentation Requirements

  • Theme: Each group is assigned one McLuhan concept (e.g., The Medium is the Message, The Global Village, Hot vs. Cool Media, etc.).

  • Length: Presentations should last 5–7 minutes.

  • Slides: Each group must create exactly 7 slides:

    1. Introduction – Theme title, definition in your own words (1–2 sentences), and group member names.
2–6. Question Slides – Each slide answers one guiding question. Every group member is responsible for one question and one slide.

    2. Conclusion – Restate your theme in your own words and explain how it connects to today’s digital/media environment (e.g., TikTok, Instagram, memes, VR, AI).

🔹 Speaking Roles

  • Slide 1: One student introduces the group and theme.

  • Slides 2–6: Each student presents their assigned question/answer for about 45–60 seconds.

  • Slide 7: One or two students deliver the conclusion (about 1 minute).

  • Every group member must participate in the presentation.

🔹 Slide Design

  • Keep text short (bullet points, not paragraphs).

  • Include at least one image, meme, diagram, or screenshot to illustrate your idea.

  • Make your slide visually clear and easy to follow.

🔹 Time Management

  • Preparation time in class: 15 minutes.

  • Presentation time per group: 5–7 minutes.

  • Aim for about 1 minute per slide.

✅ Tips for Success

  • Answer your questions clearly and directly.

  • Use examples your classmates will recognize from daily life.

  • Practice once as a group to check your timing and transitions.

Think of your group’s presentation as part of a bigger puzzle — when all six groups present, we will see the full picture of McLuhan’s media theory.

Group 4 – The Global Village

  1. What does McLuhan mean by the “global village”?

  2. What technology first made the “global village” possible?

  3. What modern technology best represents the global village today?

  4. What’s one positive effect of the global village?

  5. What’s one negative or dangerous effect of the global village?
