Visual Artifact
A visual artifact is the concrete, observable output of creative production—the film, photograph, design, interface, or image that viewers encounter. Visual artifacts function simultaneously as aesthetic objects, communicative vehicles, and evidence of the decisions that produced them. Unlike internal intent, artifacts exist in shareable, persistent form that can be viewed, analyzed, critiqued, and evaluated by others. Authorship
Authorship refers to the relationship between creator and work that confers both credit and responsibility for creative decisions embedded in the artifact. Legal definitions of authorship (particularly in copyright contexts) typically require human intentionality, creative control, and sufficient original expression contributed by the named author. In AI-mediated creation, authorship becomes complex: the human who specifies objectives, selects approaches, and evaluates outputs exercises creative control, while the system executes generation based on those specifications. Current legal frameworks generally recognize as authors those humans who make creative decisions that shape expressive outcomes, not the tools (whether brushes, cameras, or AI systems) that execute those decisions.

Accountability
Accountability is the condition of being answerable for decisions, actions, and consequences, with the capacity to explain and justify the reasoning behind choices made. In creative production, accountability requires documenting decision-making processes, maintaining traceability from requirements through implementations to outcomes, and accepting responsibility for both intended and unintended effects of created works. When AI systems participate in production, accountability remains with human practitioners who specify objectives, set constraints, evaluate outputs, and decide which results to use. Accountability cannot be delegated to automated systems that lack intentionality and cannot bear moral or legal responsibility.

Constraint (in creative context)
Constraints are limitations—technological, economic, temporal, material, ethical, or conceptual—that bound the solution space within which creative work occurs. Real constraints distinguish professional creative practice from unconstrained ideation: budget limits determine available resources, deadlines establish time boundaries, technical capabilities define feasible approaches, ethical principles restrict acceptable methods, and legal requirements create compliance obligations. Constraints force prioritization, require trade-off decisions, and channel creative problem-solving toward solutions that work within bounded conditions. Many students believe that AI tools will eliminate the difficult work of translating vision into reality, functioning as "magic wands" that automatically convert vague ideas into polished outputs. Recognizing that AI systems require precise specification of creative intent, operate under the same resource and ethical constraints as human production, and shift rather than eliminate the challenges of authorship and accountability prevents unrealistic expectations and ineffective tool use.

The authorship dimension has direct implications for students' developing professional identities and portfolios. When students use AI-generated elements in their work without understanding authorship principles, they risk making unsupportable claims about their creative contributions. Portfolio pieces that cannot be defended—where students cannot articulate which creative decisions they made versus which were determined by automated systems—undermine professional credibility. This overestimates both specification precision achievable through current interfaces and AI systems' capabilities to perfectly realize complex creative visions. Creative intent often includes tacit aesthetic judgments, embodied knowledge, and contextual nuances that resist complete verbal articulation. Additionally, AI systems trained on broad patterns cannot reliably generate highly specific visions without extensive iteration, selection, and refinement. The intent-to-artifact gap persists even with AI assistance—it transforms but does not disappear.
